項目符號 Frequently Asked Questions

1. There is a NetWare server on the network regardless of whether there is a NT server or not.

It is highly recommended that you configure the print server as a NetWare print server at Bindery mode if there is a NetWare server either 3.x or 4.x on the network. All workstations on the network send the print jobs to the NetWare queue then to the print server and its attached printer. You can use the quick installation method to install the print server,

  • Log in to your NetWare server as SUPERVISOR.
  • Insert the floppy disk included with the Print Server, and change to the appropriate drive (A: or B:). Please make sure the diskette is writable, or copy all of the files on the diskette to a sub-directory on your hard disk drive before starting the installation.
  • Run the INSTALL program
  • Select your new Print Server from the displayed list and press Enter. The name listed will be the same as the Device Name printed on a label on your Print Server.
  • A list of defaults will be displayed. If you need to change any of these items, use the arrow keys to choose the item you need to change, then press Enter to display a list of choices. When all of the values are correct, select the Continue Installation item and press Enter.
  • The quick installation program will set up the Print Server, and when the setup is complete, it will also create a file called PRINTSIR.BAT that you can run after logging in to the file server to redirect print commands to the new Print Server. A sample PRINTSIR.BAT file is shown below:
  • capture /S=III /Q=PRINTSIR_Q1 /nt /nff /nb /l=1 /ti=10

  • This redirects the LPT1 port (/l=1) to the print queue PRINTSIR_Q1 on the file server named III. No banner page will be printed (/nb), no form feed (blank page) will be added to the end of the job (/nff), and tabs will not be expanded into spaces (/nt). If the program does not explicitly signal end-of-job, the capture facility will wait 10 seconds (/ti=10) before assuming that the print job is complete.
  • Reset the Print Server to have the changes take effect.
  • Create the printer icon that can print jobs to the NetWare queue on each Windows workstation or redirect the local print port to the NetWare queue on each DOS workstation.

2. There is a Windows NT server on the network without NetWare server.

It is highly recommended that you print you jobs with TCP/IP protocol. You can configure a NT server as print queue server, other workstations on the network send the print jobs to the NT server then to the print server and its attached printer.

  • Set up an IP address to the Print Server.
  • You will have to enable the TCP/IP protocol at the NT server, and enable the Microsoft TCP/IP printing service at NT server, using the Windows NT Network control panel.
  • Create the lpr printer icon on the NT server, share this printer to the network. The created printer icon should be able to print jobs to the print server.
  • Install the TCP/IP protocol on each Windows 95/98, and create the printer icon that can print jobs to the shared printer on the above NT server.
  • Install MS Client with on each DOS workstations.
  • Verify if you can print a job from NT server to the print server, then verify if you can print a job from workstation either Windows 95/98 or DOS to the print server.

3. There is neither NetWare server nor NT server on the network, only Windows 95/98 workstations.

It is highly recommended that you print you jobs with TCP/IP protocol on pure peer-to-peer Windows environment. All Windows workstations on the network directly send the print jobs to the print server and its attached printer. Assume that you do not need to connect to Internet and your network is simple, just a single segment.

  • Start the Print Server, and have the Print Server act as DHCP server that will assign IP address to the network automatically.
  • Install the TCP/IP protocol on each Windows 95/98, and configure its IP address as automatic.
  • Install LPR Network Print Driver for Windows 95/98, provided with the Print Server, and create the printer icon for lpr printing. The created printer can print jobs to the Print Server using LPR/LPD protocol.
  • Verify if you can print a job from Windows 95/98 to the print server.

4. There is a UNIX host on the network.

It is highly recommended that you print you jobs with TCP/IP protocol on UNIX environment. A UNIX workstation on the network can directly send the print jobs to the print server and its attached printer.

  • Set up an IP address to the Print Server.
  • Install TCP/IP protocol and configure an IP address to the UNIX host.
  • Configure remote lpd printing on the UNIX host.
  • Verify if you can print a job from the UNIX host to the print serve.
